Leaving Leadville

July 14th, 2025

Tomorrow, I will leave the Leadville area and head northwest towards Yampa, Colorado. At that village, I will turn west, up a winding gravel road to Bear Lake U.S.F.S Campground. This has been one of my favorite places to camp for several summers.

I will air up the paddle board for a little fishing and hike the area trails and then will return to the Leadville area for the August events. This will include the Boom Day Festival and Leadville Trail 100 MTB and Running Races. I need to set up in a campsite prior to the weekend events in order to beat the crowds.

Currently, the plan is to head to Minnesota the week before Labor Day for a wilderness canoe trip on the Namakagan River. If that happens, I will return to Colorado in September with a decision to make. Either I will hitch up and head southwest towards southern Arizona for the winter, or store the trailer for the winter and head back to Minnesota for a winter of skiing (provided there is snow).

  1. If you decide to stay in MN for the winter let us know. We would love to catch up and do some skiing with you. With all the rain we have had this summer maybe the precipitation will continue this winter with plenty of the white stuff.

    1. I am thinking seriously about spending half the winter +/- in MN. Not sure yet whether Oct-Holidays or Jan-April. Depends on what the BLM decides to do with their Long Term Visitor Area fees later this summer. Obviously, the latter period would be best for skiing. Hopefully will know by Labor Day.
