Day One

May 7th, 2022

Eighteen months ago, I outlined a plan in a post called “Moving Forward”. That plan has now been completed except for a final step. I have purchased a tow vehicle and travel trailer, sold my home, and am now headed out on the road. The final step is retirement, and that comes in 2 months. Until then, I will continue to work remotely from the trailer.

Yesterday, I left my home in Oxford. I shook hands or received hugs from the friends in my neighborhood as they wished me good luck. I am on a “break in” camping trip to a recreation area 11 miles north of Oxford. In the next 14 days I will make short trips back south to say goodbye to a couple of friends in the Oxford area. I will see my friends Sai and Alekhya, and my son Zach one last time before I head to Upper Michigan and turn to the west. This will be hard, as I have never been away from Zach for more than a week or two at a time since he was born. And the two young ladies who started out as my co-workers, have become my best friends over the last 7 years. I will miss them greatly. We are generations apart in age, and yet they consistently included me in their lives.

Over 25 years ago I moved to Michigan. All but three of those years I resided in Oxford. While I will be back at times to visit my son, it is doubtful I will ever live there again. I don’t know where the road will take me.

  1. I have loved reading your posts as you’ve prepared for this new chapter – because of content and your talent with language! You have my very, very best wishes as you start down this new path. Do keep in touch. I’m going to be in Valparaiso most of the summer. I’d love to see you. Diane
