Elephant Butte State Park

April 21st, 2025

I rolled into the town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico on Tuesday the 15th. I stopped at the Bullocks Grocery to top off my supplies before driving through the unique downtown area and climbed the hill towards Elephant Butte. My campsite was #22 in the Quail Run Campground of the State Park.

The campground was very clean with paved sites, electricity and water surrounded by sandy desert overlooking the large reservoir. A few people chose to camp right on the beaches. My site was visited by quail and doves during the day. It is hotter here, so I enjoyed the electricity to run fans and my air conditioner in the afternoon. I used my microwave for the first time in 7 months, to cook some breakfast burritos.

One morning I drove into town to the Walmart. It is the first one I have ever seen that had covered parking. The cover was actually solar panels.

When you travel in the early spring, you sometimes get change. After 3 days of dusty winds, on Friday, the temperature was 84. On Saturday morning, it was snowing. But maybe that should never be a surprise on Easter weekend.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, the campground was about 75% full. By Sunday afternoon, it was again almost empty. On Tuesday morning, another site opened up.
