A Year on the Road

May 8th, 2023

On Saturday, May 6th, I reached the anniversary of the sale of my home, and start of my vagabond travels. It has been an interesting year, with visits to many new places. I am now looking forward to a spring and summer looping north through Wyoming, Montana and Idaho. I will visit some old familiar places as well as some new ones.

First however, I was finally near my son Tyler’s home near Boulder, Colorado. He was close enough to join me on May 5th for dinner at the Cracker Barrel restaurant where I was staying the night. The next day we did breakfast at The Buff, a popular dining place near the University of Colorado, Boulder. I had not seen him since my hospital stay back in February.

It was great getting caught up. He had just been promoted to a Level 5 Engineer at Google’s Boulder office.

“Always remember, your dad is the only man who is happy when you are better than him”.

Google is a very difficult place to be hired. Employees are generally deemed the “best of the best” in information technology. He is a very good example of how hard work pays off. On Monday he gave me a tour of the Boulder office. One of the perks he receives is free meals in the cafeteria. We had breakfast together next to windows overlooking Boulder, with a backdrop of the Flat Iron Mountains.

After the tour, Tyler went to work, and I drove over for a walk up and down Pearl Street. The street is now a walkable mall. Freshly planted Tulips and Pansies decorated the street.

I will visit Tyler, his girlfriend Taylor, and their Australian Shepherd, Theo until Wednesday the 10th. On that day, I have an early morning cardiologist appointment, after which I will head north to Wyoming and eventually to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks.

  1. Happy to hear you’re feeling good and still on the move! We will meet Doug Scott and Glenda for dinner on Sat. when they’re passing through the panhandle of FL. I haven’t seen them since our mini-reunion when we were at your mom and dad’s. I hope you’ll make it this way one of these days. I’m hoping to make it to Rockford to see Dawn this summer. Maybe your mom and Connie can drop down for a visit too. Take care of yourself and stay in touch.
