Straits State Park, St. Ignace, MI

May 21st – Jun 1st, 2022

I have spent the last 11 days just north of the Mackinac Bridge, which spans the strait connecting Lake Michigan to Lake Huron. The park is small, but with 2 separate campgrounds. One is near the shoreline, where the bridge can be seen and the other, the one at which I stayed, is on a hill to the north. The grounds were well maintained. The grass was mowed and facilities were clean. Campsites were level with a gravel pad. Each site has a fire ring and picnic table. My site was backed by a small wooded area but was open to the south.

The first weekend, the sites were about 50% full, but on Memorial Day weekend, it was more near 90%. Campers from the “thumb” started to arrive on Thursday, but most showed up on Friday evening. A few additional campers arrived on Saturday morning. The process reversed on Monday morning, as some packed up and left to avoid the afternoon and evening rush. Interstate 75 typically becomes a bumper to bumper traffic jam the last day of the 3 day holiday. On Tuesday morning, a few last holdouts moved on. This left about 6 units occupied out of the 80 or so in my loop of the grounds. Quiet returned and songbirds began to sing again each morning at sunrise.

While the park was a pleasant place to stay, with a good cell signal and 22 television stations, you don’t get much of an outdoors feeling. The main grocery store is only 1/4 mile away and the town is just beyond that. This park serves as a convenient location for those wishing to ride the ferry over to Mackinac Island as well as a few fishermen. It is kind of a “city” park. At a cost of $37 per night, including electrical service, it is much less expensive than one of the local hotels.

Today, June 1st, I packed up, and headed to the northwest, to a more remote area of the Upper Peninsula.
