Dispersed Camping Part 2

After 5 days on the west side of Halfmoon Creek, I moved over the the east side and found a site that would fit my friends Mark and Phyllis’s A-Liner camper. The main Halfmoon Road is a little accessible and as it was Friday before the holiday weekend, more sites were already filled. However, I manage to find one near the Forest Service campground.

We set up for Friday through Monday. On Saturday, Roger, Phyllis’s brother, and I hiked a loop trail out of the Leadville Fish Hatchery. It gained 1000 feet, entered the Mount Massive Wilderness and met the Colorado Trail.

Of Sunday, the four of us hiked a 7.5-mile loop at Tennessee Pass, north of Leadville. Tennessee Pass is an area we skied back in the last 80s and early 90s. After the hike we drove up to visit a friend who lives up the Mosquito Pass Road, east of Leadville. From his home, we could see the fireworks display down in Leadville.

Tuesday, the 6th of July, we packed up and drove south through Buena Vista and over to South Park. We passed through Fairplay and Jefferson and took the Forest Service road east to the Lost Creek Campground, surrounded by the Lost Creek Wilderness. The road is rough, taking about an hour to go the 19 miles. We had our choice of sites as nobody else was there. Our sites were on a knoll overlooking Lost Creek.

On Thursday, I packed and at 3am on Friday, started down to Boulder to see my son Tyler.
